Malcolm Gladwell talks about how it takes 10,000 hours to master anything, even for those born with masterful gifts.
From toddlerhood, we’re taught that there’s no free lunch, that the law of exchange states that you can’t get something for nothing. We’re told over and over that we get out of life what we put into it and that the glory is found in the work and the grit and the laser-sharp focus. That money doesn’t grow on trees, that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is and that we should never feel entitled to anything.
Hard work, diligence, perseverance and slow and steady are seemingly ingrained premises.
Why is it then, we’re inundated with contradictions and unrealistic solutions being served on proverbial sliver platters everywhere we look.
QUICK FIXES. Miracle cures. Pills, Lotions, Potions. 6 pack ab machines we can use while we’re watching TV, red wine is so good for us that it can replace exercise, diet pills to lose weight instantly…pills to feel happy, pills to keep our kids in check, pills for our cholesterol, pills for our blood sugar, pills for our blood pressure and… vaccines which can prevent all human suffering.
I use to have psoriasis. It was very severe. When you wear a major illness on your skin for everyone to see, the miracle cures are so attractive that you’re the first in line for them, regardless of the contradiction.
For me, Some of these miracles cures were useless, some broke the bank, some harmed my liver and none of them healed my issue.
Once I realized that healing is an inside job and that the lotions and potions would always leave me chasing after the illusion of good health (after all, skin health is a major mirror for overall health), I realized that it was up to me.
I changed the way I ate, the supplements I took, the exercise I did, and most importantly, the way I “thought”. It took time because, with healing, the proper tools and proper amount of time can’t be bypassed.
Until the moment we’re dead, our bodies strive toward healing, it’s in our genetic makeup and it applies to every single one of us. Healing, however, is not fooled by short cuts or quick fix miracles. It takes the slow steady road, the consistent practice and in my experience, it isn’t dependent on more lab-made chemicals.
Tiny acorns have everything they need to become majestic oak trees…and within every one of us, resides everything we need to become the most inspiring version of ourselves imaginable.
